What experience do you bring to the table that would help you serve as MAC secretary?

Having served as MAC Secretary since 2013 and on Council from 2010 to 2013, I have first-hand understanding of the current issues facing MAC. MAC offers valuable continuing education experiences at Annual Meetings, Symposia, and Speakers Bureaus; publishes a highly regarded journal; and supports an active awards program. We have met most objectives of the 2011-2015 strategic plan and moved forward on other fronts. Yet, significant challenges remain. The scale and complexity of member services means that increasingly we must rely on professional service providers instead of volunteers. Costs of such services continue to exceed income, despite a recent dues increase.

As MAC charts its future direction, it needs leaders who understand how to evaluate the challenges and opportunities, set priorities, and allocate resources for maximum impact. My experience chairing the Strategic Plan Steering Committee at the UWM Libraries has shown me how to develop a successful strategic plan, engage stakeholders, and communicate effectively about outcomes. Additionally, as a member of the executive body of the UWM Libraries, I have experience making decisions about the distribution of limited resources across an organization to support long-term and high-level plans. In the coming years, MAC will face difficult decisions about how to sustain and increase services to membership while remaining a good deal for both new archivists and established professionals with limited continuing education dollars. To meet these challenges, MAC needs leaders who dream big, seek broad input, work collaboratively, and strive for consensus. I appreciate the opportunity to run and look forward to helping to shape MAC’s future.

What experience do you bring to the table that would help you serve as MAC secretary?

Since entering the archival profession, I have dipped in and out of MAC service in varying capacities, as a committee member or chair, an ex-officio member of Council and most recently, as an elected Council member. While my history of service to MAC would certainly help with the transition as the organization’s Secretary, I would be remiss if I did not point out that the Midwest Archives Conference is a dynamic group that is constantly changing to meet the needs of its members. So, like any other candidate you vote for today, I will have a bit of a learning curve. But as cliché as it sounds, MAC truly has helped me so much in my professional career – both with education and networking – that I felt strongly it was time for me to offer back a higher level of service.
